Ed Startup 101, Week 2 (Part 2: "Some Startups We Love")

I’ve already written one post this week about Ed Startup 101 — that one addressing the notion of an “ed-tech space.” But that post doesn’t really answer this week’s assignment for the class. Nor does what I’ve written below really, (oh well!) but it gets a little bit closer.
The Assignment
Here’s this week’s Ed Startup 101 assignment:

The Children’s App Manifesto: Supporting High Quality, Affordable Educational Apps

Andy Russell, the co-founder of Launchpad Toys — maker of the awesome Toontastic storytelling app — once worked for a major toy company. You could design the most wonderful educational toy, he told me, with creative and innovative features, but the marketing department was always interested in the shelf appeal — as in, what features could be triggered and played with while the toy was still in a box on the shelf at the store.
